What's My Omega Speedmaster Worth in South Africa?

The Speedmaster is probably the most misjudged watch I see in this country. People either think their everyday modern Moonwatch is a small fortune, or they have a genuinely valuable vintage piece and have no idea. Both walk in with the wrong number in their head.

Here's how the Speedmaster actually prices in the South African market, and how to work out where yours sits before anyone makes you an offer.

The range is enormous, and that's the whole point

Speedmaster values run from around R90,000 for a more recent stainless-steel model in good order, up past R1,000,000 for precious-metal versions, with rare collector pieces going well beyond that. Two watches that look almost identical on the wrist can be separated by hundreds of thousands of rand.

So "what's a Speedmaster worth" has no single answer. What yours is worth comes down to a few specific things.

What separates a R90,000 Speedmaster from a R700,000 one

Which Speedmaster it is. The standard Moonwatch Professional is the heart of the range and the most common. Vintage Moonwatches actually worn during the space era, in good condition, sit in a different bracket, roughly R138,000 to R206,000. Special and limited editions, the Silver Snoopy Award, the Apollo anniversaries, Speedy Tuesday and the like, climb higher again, often R234,000 to R700,000+ depending on the piece and its condition.

Metal. Steel is the baseline. Gold and other precious-metal cases push a Speedmaster into the R1,000,000+ conversation on their own.

Vintage vs modern. Age alone doesn't mean value, but the right vintage reference in honest, original condition is where the real money often sits, precisely because those are getting harder to find.

Condition and originality. An unpolished case, an original dial, correct hands, and honest wear beat a polished-up example every time. Over-polishing removes metal and value. Replaced or reluminated dials hurt a collector piece badly.

Box and papers. As with any Swiss watch, a full set adds roughly 10 to 30% over a watch with no documentation.

How to find your Speedmaster's real number

  1. Find the reference number on the case, between the lugs, and identify exactly which Speedmaster you have. "Speedmaster" is a family, not a model.

  2. Search Chrono24 sold listings for that reference, filtered to South Africa, last 90 days. Sold, not asking.

  3. Place yours in the range by condition, originality, and documentation.

  4. For a dealer sale, expect 60 to 75% of that market value. That's the honest margin. Below 55% is a lowball.

A word on the vintage pieces especially

If you have an older Speedmaster, get it looked at by someone who actually knows the references before you do anything, including before you service or polish it. I've seen people "tidy up" a vintage Moonwatch and knock a serious amount off its value in the process, because to a collector, originality and honest patina are worth more than a shiny case. When in doubt, leave it exactly as it is and get expert eyes on it first.

If you want to know what yours is really worth

We've bought and valued Omega and other Swiss-made watches in South Africa since 1951. Send us photos of your Speedmaster and the reference number, and we'll come back within 24 hours with a fair market figure, the comparable sales behind it, and no pressure to sell. If it's a vintage piece you should hold rather than sell, we'll tell you that too.
